Champagne Charles Collin – La belle Gabrielle

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(around 26 Euros per bottle)

Brand of the Fontette cooperative winery, which groups 160 wine growers and producers, the Champagne House of Charles Collin produces and sells over one million bottles of Champagne a year, paying great attention to quality, on sites in Fontette and Essoyes.

A luxurious and alluring look for this Cuvée with such a tempting name produced in honour of Gabrielle Renard, born in Essoyes, preferred model of the famous painter Auguste Renoir, and nanny and mentor to his son Jean Renoir a renowned French film director.

Appearance :

·     Pale gold with green glints

·     Fine, plentiful perlage

·     Elegant bead

·     Limpid and bright

Nose :

·     Alluring, fine and elegant, good expression of the 85% Chardonnay used in the blending

·     Delicious aromas of butter, brioche, gently toasted and roasted, an expression of the great maurity of this Champagne obtained from carefully selected plots, with lengthy ageing of the bottles sur lattes

·     Developing towards notes of citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit), apple, pear and hazelnut, but also more subtly of prunes thanks to the 15% Pinot Noir

·     Very slightly woody note, thanks to ageing the liqueur d’expédition in oak barrels, added to the dosage after disgorgement of the bottles

Palate :

·     Pure, mineral attack

·     The palate is enhanced by a lively and refreshing tension, a beautiful image of 2006 vintage from which this entire cuvée is obtained, intensified by a meticulous separation of the first run wine or «cœur de cuvée» during the grape pressing

·     Aromas of hazelnut, honey, apricot and raisin

·     Spicy finish (liquorice)

·     Considerable length on the palate

With this Cuvée La Belle Gabrielle, Guillaume Cartier, Chef de Cave of the Champagne House of Charles Collin, signs his name to Champagne with incredible personality, a source of great pleasure and a wonderful reward for a wine growing and making technique resolutely aimed at quality.

An ideal aperitif and well suited throughout a meal, for example with French sautéed scallops and caramelised endives.
