Champagne Petitjean-Pienne – Cuvée Cœur de Chardonnay

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2016

(around 15 euros per bottle)

Careful and elegant presentation.

Aspect :

·        Golden and bright.
·        Particularly fine bubbles.
·        Refined bead of bubbles.

Nose :

·        Initially reserved, the nose is then revealed, harmonious, source of an intense pleasure.
·        The Chardonnay, exclusive varietal of the cuvée, carefully harvested by hand, at perfect ripeness, in plots (30 years old on average) in the Grands Crus of Cramant, Avize and Chouilly, takes us into an endless aromatic melody, with some scents of citrus fruits, almond, hazelnut, apple, pear, apricot, grape and white flowers, coupled with a iodized and mentholated breath.
·        The emerging maturity of the Champagne is then unveiled with soft notes of barely toasted caramel, the results of 3 years of ageing on laths of the bottles before disgorgement.

Palate :

·        Pure and mineral opening, reinforced by the particularly soft pressing of the grapes and by the perfect control of the malolactic fermentations of the base wines.
·        The mouth then becomes silky and deep thanks to the ageing in vats of the base wines on fine lees, for several months, underlined by the lively effervescence.
·        Tasty and warm finish.
·        Very good length on the palate.

With this Cuvée Cœur de Chardonnay, Denis Petitjean, its producer, was able to blend 3 years of harvest (10% from 2009, 30% from 2010 and 60% from 2011) to transcend the noble terroirs of the Côte des Blancs.

To taste from aperitif to meal, to accompany a Maine lobster salad, for example.

Settled since 1981 in Cramant, the Champagne House Petitjean-Pienne is currently directed by Denis Petitjean and his wife, sixth generation of wine growers recently joined by their daughter Marie. A vineyard of 4 hectares cultivated with a real desire to reduce the environmental footprint and a careful oenology with vinifications in small volumes (10 to 30 hectolitres) allow to produce around 25,000 bottles per year of a range of quality Champagnes.
