Guide VERON des Champagnes 2019
(around 45 euros per bottle)
Inimitable bottle. Cork held by the ancestral hemp
string.
Aspect:
Solar.
Bubbles of a rare finesse.
Generous tears.
Nose:
Endless aromatic delicacy.
The heady aromas of apple and pear compote,
candied citrus fruits and white flowers, signatures of the majority of
Chardonnay (80%), delicately iodized and mentholated, gently interlace the
notes of red and black fruits, expressions of the Pinot Noir (20%).
Later, the maturity of the champagne is
revealed, underlined by subtle woody notes, with captivating touches of
pastries and roasted coffee, result of the long ageing on laths of the bottles
before riddling and disgorgement.
Palate:
Lively opening, reinforced by the timely stop
of the malolactic fermentation of the base wines vinified in barrels.
The mouth becomes caressing, with a
remarkable presence, thanks to regular bâtonnages
(in order to keep fine lees suspended) during the the ageing in oak barrels for
9 months, before blending and bottling.
Balanced finish.
Impressive length on the palate.
For this Cuvée 1809, touching celebration of
the foundation year of the Champagne house A. D. Coutelas, Damien and Angélique
Coutelas put their œnological expertise in the service of the grapes harvested
by hand in their very old vines, cultivated in the traditional way.
To
taste from aperitif to meal, with a heart of sweetbread, asparagus and morels,
for example.
Eighth generation of wine growers, Damien and Angélique
Coutelas, recently settled in Dizy, continue with passion the family saga
started in 1809 in Villers-sous-Châtillon, in the heart of the Marne Valley.
Driven by a real desire to reduce the environmental footprint, they cultivate
their 7 hectares vineyard, planted with the three champenois varietals (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier), to perpetuate
the house style producing each year around 80,000 bottles of champagnes
revealing terroirs, of which 85% are
reserved for exportation.
