Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte – Cuvée 225 Millésimée 2004

Guide VERON des Champagnes 2013

(around 50 Euros per bottle)

Founded in 1972, the Centre Vinicole – Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte is the oldest union of Champagne Cooperatives consisting of 82 winemaking cooperatives representing around 5,000 wine growers. A leading Champagne brand in France, with a total cellar capacity of 300,000 hectolitres, in Chouilly, capable of storing over 100 million bottles and follows an environmentally friendly sustainable development model.

An elegant look for this Cuvée, which takes its name from the 225L oak barrels used in its production. A generous sized bottle.

Appearance :

·        Pale gold with green glints

·        Fine, evenly distributed perlage

·        Subtle and persistent bead

·        Bright

Nose :

·        Great complexity thanks to the accurate blending of 25 meticulously selected Premiers and Grand Crus

·        Initially transient, with aromas of candied citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit), walnut and hazelnut, combined with a hint of fresh butter, an expression of the Chardonnay that represents 50% of the blend

·        A steady opening, with notes of pear, but above all mirabelle plum, cherry and exotic fruits, thanks to the 50% Pinot Noir

·        The nose is then, after a minute or so, decidedly complex, but lively, a source of intense pleasure, with delicate woody and vanilla notes, an expression of the fermentation and ageing the base wines in oak barrels for 8 months, all perfectly managed

·        Great maturity, with toasted and brioche-like notes, combined with caramel and chocolate, obtained with lengthy ageing sur lattes of the bottles before disgorgement (5 years)

Palate :

·        Mighty attack, enveloping, smooth and dense, almost winy, invigorated by subtle, elegant woody notes and a marked liveliness

·        Delicious notes of honey, toasted walnut and hazelnut, emphasised by a slight hint of mint

·        Deliciously spicy finish (pepper, liquorice, cinnamon), with notes of plum and sour cherry

·        Great length on the palate

With this Cuvée 225 Millésimée 2004, David Hénault, Chef de Cave of the Champagne House of Nicolas Feuillatte, signs his name to Champagne that is superb and generous delivering a wonderful image of the 2004 vintage.

Delicious as an aperitif, but above all during a meal, with white meats or poultry such as Mushroom stuffed chicken.
